The Psalms are a collection of prayers and songs found in the Old Testament that express the full range of human emotion before God—joy and gratitude, sorrow and repentance, trust and longing.

Traditionally attributed to King David and other authors, the Psalms were central to the prayer life of Israel and remain at the heart of the Church’s worship today, especially in the Mass and the Liturgy of the Hours.

They can teach people how to pray honestly and deeply, showing that every part of human experience can be brought before God.

For Catholic teachers new to Scripture, the Psalms provide a rich resource for prayer, reflection, and teaching, helping us to understand how God’s people have always sought to praise Him and rely on His steadfast love.
