Since the reappointment of our government and the return of Minister Jason Clare to the Education portfolio, there has been renewed momentum in several important areas of education policy, including early childhood education.
As the peak body for Catholic education, NCEC represents 693 approved services under the National Quality Framework and 417 early childhood education and care services.
The research shows that early childhood education is fundamental in building the cognitive, social and emotional skills required to ensure a positive transition into school. However, places are limited, both within metro areas and particularly in regional and remote Australia.
Catholic schools offer unique opportunities to establish early childhood centres on school sites—helping to meet the needs of families and ensure a smoother transition for children into primary school. One of our key priorities is to expand access to early learning, by partnering with the Australian Government to access the Building Early Education Fund. There are also a number of state-based funding initiatives that we are grateful to be able to access.
We are currently compiling feedback on the National Child Safety Review Regulation Impact Statement, which focuses on strengthening protections in education and care services to reduce the risk of harm, abuse and neglect of children. This is critical work as we continue on our journey to provide high-quality early education and care in safe and nurturing environments.
NCEC will continue to advocate for funding, legislation and policy to support the expansion of early childhood education and care services across Australia.
