The latest report from The Australia Institute titled “Australia’s Private High School Problem: Unequal, Expensive and Falling Behind,” is another example of the unhelpful division that is too often cultivated between school sectors. Rather than encouraging diversity in schooling and supporting parental and family choice to improve outcomes for every Australian student, it simply continues the old grievances that pit government, Catholic and independent schools against one another.

While this report claims that parents are paying for an education that is not as good as that offered in government schools – it’s simply not true. Furthermore, that assertion ignores the many reasons families choose Catholic schools, including faith, values, community, student wellbeing and a unique and Catholic approach to education.

Catholic schools educate more than 830,000 students from all backgrounds. Our commitment is to provide an affordable, high-quality education that develops the whole person. We also play a vital role in Australia’s education system by offering genuine school choice while delivering significant value for families and taxpayers. Real, affordable school choice is an integral element of education in Australia, and one we should be proud of.

Catholic education supports fair, needs-based funding for every Australian student. Improving education outcomes does not come at the expense of students and families making choices that reflect their values, priorities and that is best for their child. Reflecting this tradition and ensuring every child has access to an excellent education, wherever they go to school, is the path to improving education and opportunity for all.
