Last week, on the eve of the 2025 Australian Catholic Education Conference, the National Catholic Education Commission held their commission meeting and participated in a school tour at Newman Catholic College in Cairns.

Opened in 2022 and co-located with James Cook University’s Nguma-bada campus at Smithfield, Newman College is the first Catholic school in Australia to be situated within a university precinct – a unique way of bringing together faith, learning, and life, and creating opportunities for students to engage more closely with both academic and community experiences.

The Commission was warmly welcomed by Principal Lauretta Graham, her dedicated staff, and the inspiring young people who are truly the heart of their community. The college is a living example of Catholic education’s commitment to Faith, Excellence and Access, from state-of-the-art facilities that reflect the dignity of every learner, to innovative programs that nurture the whole person: mind, body, and spirit.

As part of its innovation program, the college makes full use of world-class university facilities, particularly through its Marine and Health Sciences and STEM programs. It’s Beyond the Classroom opportunities further extend learning, enabling students to engage in marine and aerospace activities and apply their skills in real-world contexts.

The school also serves as the centre of its faith community, with strong participation from parents, parishioners, local businesses, and community members in school life and events.

It was uplifting to meet students so full of hope, joy, and generosity, and teachers so passionate about forming leaders of tomorrow. Newman Catholic College is a flourishing community of faith and learning, and a shining sign of what Catholic education can achieve.

NCEC Executive Director Jacinta Collins said, “Newman Catholic College demonstrates the very best of Catholic education – innovative, inclusive, and deeply grounded in faith. It is inspiring to see a community where students are encouraged to grow in knowledge, character, and service.”
