When staff at Our Lady Help of Christians Primary School, Wendouree were asked to nominate a teacher who inspires, they encountered an unexpected challenge.

They couldn’t choose just one.

Not because there wasn’t a standout educator. Rather, because they believed the story worth telling was about an entire team of educators working together to ensure every child feels known, valued and supported.

At the heart of the school is a simple motto, Every Face Has a Place. It is more than a statement. It is a philosophy that shapes daily interactions, decision making and relationships across the community.

The teachers recognised through this nomination include Karen Bell, Grace Catterson, Allison Clack, Samantha Curtis, Carlie Daley, Hannah Fitzpatrick, Ashleigh Goossens, Angelique Greene, Elise Hankin, Kim Ickeringill, Naomi Irvin, Nicole Irvin, Marnie Jones, Morgan Knaggs, Lisa McKenzie, Sarah Ness, Karli New, Adele Pye, Sharalle Raven, Nicole Ross, Dionne Skellern and Kirsty Torne.

The power of belonging

The school’s approach is built on a belief that learning flourishes when children feel safe, connected and valued.

Staff speak about the importance of knowing students as individuals, recognising their strengths and helping them develop confidence in their own abilities.

For some children, that might mean additional support with their learning. For others, it could be encouragement to step outside their comfort zone, build friendships or take on new challenges.

Whatever the need, the goal is the same – ensuring every child feels a genuine sense of belonging.

The school’s Catholic identity underpins this work. Staff draw on values of dignity, compassion and inclusion, recognising that every child is unique and worthy of care, respect and opportunity.

These values shape not only how students learn, but also how they relate to one another and contribute to the wider community.

Small moments, lasting impact

Ask the staff what makes them proud and they rarely point to awards or achievements. Instead, they talk about the moments that can easily go unnoticed.

A child arriving at school with renewed confidence after a difficult start to the year.

A student discovering a genuine enthusiasm for learning.

A family feeling welcomed, supported and connected.

While these moments may seem small, they often become the building blocks of a child’s growth and success.

Their impact is rarely the result of a single interaction. Rather, it reflects the combined efforts of staff working together to support every student.

Educating the whole child

The educators believe one of the greatest strengths of Catholic education is its focus on the whole person. Academic growth matters, but it sits alongside personal wellbeing, character formation, faith development and relationships.

In a world where many young people are searching for connection and purpose, a strong school community can provide an important sense of stability and belonging.

That sense of belonging is built through countless everyday interactions. A greeting at the school gate. An encouraging conversation. A staff member who notices when something isn’t quite right. A teacher who helps a student recognise strengths they did not know they possessed.

On their own, these moments may seem unremarkable. Together, they help shape how children see themselves and the world around them.

The staff know they may never fully understand the impact of every kindness, lesson or opportunity they provide. Yet they continue to invest in the children and families entrusted to their care, knowing that feeling seen, respected and supported can change the trajectory of a young person’s life.

Throughout their lives, many people can point to a teacher who inspired them, encouraged them or helped them believe in themselves. At this school, those moments are strengthened by a community of educators who share responsibility for helping children learn, grow and flourish.

That commitment is captured in four simple words: Every Face Has a Place.

More importantly, it is reflected in the way the community lives out those words every day.
