The Chair of the National Catholic Education Commission, Mrs Therese Temby, today welcomed the undertaking by Prime Minister Gillard and Minister Garrett to increase funding to assist schools better meet the needs of students with disability.
“This funding will help the 25,000 students with disability in Australian Catholic schools,” said Mrs Temby.
“There are ten Catholic special schools in Australia, some of which are among the first such schools established in Australia. They will benefit greatly from this increase in Australian Government funding,” Mrs Temby said.
“Many regular Catholic schools will also benefit,” said Mrs Temby, “as Catholic schools in most states tend to have similar proportions of students with disability as government schools, but do not enjoy the same level of resources.”
“The National Catholic Education Commission has also made a strong case in its submission to the national Gonski Funding Review for more equitable funding arrangements for students with disability in Catholic schools,” said Mrs Temby.
